About the Author
Vivek Chopra has over ten years of experience as a software developer, architect, and team lead, with extensive experience with Web services, J2EE, and middleware technologies. He has worked and consulted at a number of Silicon Valley companies and startups and has (pending) patents on Web services. Vivek actively writes about technology and has coauthored half a dozen books on topics such as opensource software, Java, XML, and Web services. He contributes to open source, too, and has developed parts of the uddi4j library, an open-source Java API for UDDI.

Sing Li, first bit by the microcomputer bug in 1978, has grown up with the microprocessor age. His first personal computer was a do-it-yourself Netronics COSMIC ELF computer with 256 bytes of memory, mail-ordered from the back pages of Popular Electronics magazine. Currently, Sing is a consultant, system designer, open-source software contributor, and freelance writer. He writes for several popular technical journals and e-zines and is the creator of the Internet Global Phone, one of the very first Internet phones available. He has authored and coauthored numerous books across diverse technical topics, including JSP, Tomcat, servlets, XML, Jini, and JXTA.

Rupert Jones is a Technical Lead for J2EE projects at Internet Business Systems. Over the past six years, Rupert has provided software development and consulting services for blue-chip companies, both in Australia and internationally. He lives and works in Melbourne, Australia. Rupert can be contacted at rup@rupertjones.com.

Jon Eaves has been developing software in a variety of languages and domains for over 15 years. He is currently employed by ThoughtWorks, developing large-scale enterprise systems using J2EE. When he can find spare time, he develops J2ME/MIDP applications and works on the BouncyCastle Crypto APIs (www.bouncycastle.org). Jon can be reached at jon@eaves.org.

John T. Bell has more than 20 years of software development experience and currently serves as the lead software architect for the Web site of a major hospitality company based in Bethesda, Maryland. He is also an adjunct professor, teaching server-side Java technologies for the Center for Applied Information Technology at Towson State University. He has a master’s degree in Computer Systems Management and a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, both from the University of Maryland. This is Mr. Bell’s third contribution to a Wrox title. INFO

CommTraffic is a network traffic monitor that collects, processes, and displays traffic and network utilization statistics for computer network connections, both LAN and dial-up. When monitoring a LAN segment, CommTraffic shows traffic and network utilization statistics for each computer in the segment.

CommTraffic has a highly customizable, intuitive interface that displays statistics in graphical and numeric form. The program can be customized to display incoming, outgoing, and summary traffic statistics in a variety of styles and allows you to set time and traffic limits to reflect the rates set by your ISP. Once the limit is approached, the program will alert you by playing a sound, displaying a message, and so forth.

CommTraffic offers an array of options that allow you to generate reports that reflect the network traffic volume and Internet connection expenses. The program supports virtually any rate plan your ISP might use, such as one based on connection time, traffic volume, time of the day, and other measures. This ensures that you are always aware of your Internet connection expenses and makes traffic accounting easy.

One of the program’s unique features is its remote monitoring capability. Without it, you would only be able to monitor the network traffic in your LAN segment. However, the remote monitoring feature stretches the use of CommTraffic across a multi-segment network, or even to geographically distant networks. The program comes in two parts: CommTraffic Service and CommTraffic Console. The Service must be installed on every computer that you would like to monitor, and you may use one Console to connect to the remote or local Services, one at a time, to monitor the traffic statistics.

No1 DVD Ripper is a powerful and easy-to-use Windows application that lets you make backups of your favorite DVD movies. You can easily convert DVDs to VCD (MPEG1), SVCD (MPEG2), AVI, and Divx (MPEG4) formats. #1 DVD Ripper was the winner of Maximum PC Magazine’s 2004 Softy Award.

When you convert from DVD to Divx format, you reduce the file size by 90 percent, with no loss of quality. The program supports Dolby Surround sound. You can set up a batch of files and convert them in a single operation. For convenience, #1 DVD Ripper can shut down your computer after conversion.

Instead of converting an entire movie into one huge file, you can convert it one chapter at a time. Alternatively, you can define a file size, and save your movies in sections. The latest version of #1 DVD Ripper has a built-in bitrate calculator that you can use to determine the target file size.

No1 DVD Ripper’s quick setting panel lets you choose options quickly. You can even choose from a selection of skins, and customize the look and feel of the user interface.

Parents can use #1 DVD Ripper to preserve original DVDs, and not worry that their children might be scratching the copies during day-to-day use. The program lets you safely secure your original DVD investment.

templars.jpg

INFO

This documentary is in four parts, covering Origins, Corporation, Frontier and Legend. Origins cover how the Templars came about. They do not mention Hugh de Payne or the original group who are credited with the founding of the Templars, but does pick up from the time of the First Crusades, and does cover the circumstances of why a military order was needed, and how the Order was finally acknowledged and accepted.

Corporation is much more interesting, showing how much of an important part the Templars played in the construction of the financial basis for that time period in history. The foundation of the Templar finances is examined and clearly laid out. This is necessary in order to understand what finally happens to them.

Frontier lays the basis for the fall of the Holy Land and the effects it had on the Templars. Reinforced and secure, they lose their ground to the Mamluks. The power struggle plays out, the Holy Land is finally lost to the Crusaders, and the Templars move back into Europe to find they are financially secure, but have no reason now for existence.

The final installment, Legend, examines the fall of the Templars. Their financial holdings appealed to a failing monarchy, they become the target for the financially strapped French King, and are arrested, tortured, tried and burned.
